Leeds have confirmed the departure of defender Tom Pearce who has sealed a transfer to fellow Championship outfit Wigan.
What’s the word?
Pearce was on the verge of departing the club last week with Barnsley reportedly interested in securing his services.
However, that move fell through with a switch to Wigan arising instead.
Yorkshire Evening Post said on Wednesday that the Latics were making a bid thought to be worth £250k.
That move, however, has now been announced by the club after Hay claimed he’d passed a medical earlier on deadline day.
Best for all parties
The fact is that the England youth international was never going to get the opportunities at Leeds and as such, this is a deal that is not only best for the club who will get him off the wage bill and regain some funds, but also for the player.
The Yorkshire club have a number of left-back options but the departure of Pearce means it’ll also be hugely beneficial for Leif Davis.
The left-back had leapfrogged him in the pecking order last term anyway, playing once in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa.
Having previously gained experience at Morecambe, this could now be the ideal opportunity for another of Leeds’ bright academy products to flourish.
Yes he’ll have players like Barry Douglas and Stuart Dallas to get in front of, but with another young defender leaving it’ll give the teenager a bigger platform and a clearer way to the front of the queue.
With concerns being raised over the Whites’ defence in the build-up to the 2019/20 campaign, it doesn’t feel completely beyond the realms of possibility that Davis could get his opportunity.
Pearce leaving for Wigan only heightens his chances of succeeding in the Leeds first-team.
