da aposte e ganhe: Arsene Wenger, if he stays at the Emirates this summer, must end his resistance to compulsive spending and join the rest of the European elite in the cash-splashing stakes.
da fezbet: Toni Kroos has been linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal of late and the German midfield maestro is the exact sort of player that Wenger should be looking to sign. The Real Madrid man has not been at the club long, but it has been increasingly difficult to balance a midfield with both Kroos and Luka Modric.
The Arsenal midfield is likely to lose Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini this summer, whose contracts both expire in June, and need to add depth considering the constant injuries suffered by Jack Wilshere and the limitations to the game of Francis Coquelin. Kroos, a World Cup winner, would bring the sort of upgrade in class that Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil offered the Arsenal squad. He’s is a truly world-class performer and he should be playing in a more prominent role in a side than he has been at Real Madrid.
Francis Coquelin, for all his ‘passion’ and crunching tackles, is not the quality of defensive midfielder that Arsenal should be aiming for. Kroos, although not a defensive player, could play a role as midfield controller against the weaker sides. The ex-Bayern Munich man has a pass completion of just under 94% and is one of the best deep-lying midfield players in the world. His game is not necessarily suited to playing as an anchor man, but, with the energy of Ramsey, he could become part of a dynamic pairing for when the Gunners are looking to dominate the ball. Coquelin, although he may be disappointed at dropping to the bench occasionally, would still be of use in more challenging fixtures and would benefit from Kroos’ ability to build from deep. The French midfield destroyer needs a player who is adept in possession alongside him, which is why Cazorla has been such a miss, but he also needs a player with greater defensive awareness than Aaron Ramsey; Kroos is the perfect hybrid in this sense.

In a 4-3-3, a midfield of Coquelin, Kroos and Ramsey has everything you could want. Manchester United’s interest in Kroos is understandable, which just reinforces the reasoning for Arsenal to sign the German. Cesc Fabregas and Morgan Schneiderlin have been missed out on by Wenger over the last two summers and he cannot afford to lose out to Premier League rivals over another world-class midfielder. Of all of Arsenal central midfield options, only Cazorla has more key passes per match than Kroos, and with the German able to control the tempo of a game as he drifts around the midfield he has the technical prowess to survive the combative Premier League.
The imbalance of Madrid’s midfield should benefit Arsenal. It is not every year that a player of Kroos’ undoubted class and calibre becomes available and, if Arsenal miss out questions must be asked of their ambition. This is a player who would complement Arsenal’s current options, give them other alternatives with their shape and be a real statement of intent.
Whomever is Arsenal manager, at least one central midfielder must be signed. The acquisition of Toni Kroos would be a stunning way to start a huge summer.
