da spicy bet: Real Madrid are considering a summer swoop for Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld, according to The Mirror.
What’s the word?
da winzada777: The Belgian’s future has been a talking point for some time given that he has been one of the first-team stars that is yet to commit his future to the club.
Speculation went into overdrive after the centre-back was left out of squads for last weekend’s North London derby against Arsenal and Tuesday night’s Champions League tie with Juventus.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino has maintained that the exclusion was made so that Alderweireld can work on his fitness having just returned to action following three months out with a hamstring injury.
According to The Mirror, the 28-year-old felt that he was fit enough to play in both of those matches, and now Real Madrid have been alerted to the situation.
The publication claims that the Spanish giants could end up leading the race for the defender, who is believed to be demanding in excess of £150,000 per week to stay at Tottenham.
Should Spurs worry?
Any footballer would find it difficult to resist the lure of the Bernabeu, and more often than not, players turn their backs on the Premier League in favour of a switch to Spain.
With regards to Tottenham’s case, there could be cause for concern given that Alderweireld is yet to put pen to paper.
It is widely known that the North London club have a modest wage structure, so if chairman Daniel Levy is digging in his heels, then it could make the Belgian’s decision that much easier.
If Alderweireld does opt to leave, then Tottenham’s best option would probably be to sell to Madrid as they are bound to get a decent sum and Los Blancos are not a direct rival.
