da betway: Noel Whelan has urged Billy Gilmour to move on loan from Chelsea to Glasgow Rangers during the summer transfer window.
Gilmour should return to Ibrox
da dobrowin: Gilmour started his career with the Gers before moving to south-west London, and he has been linked with a return to the 54-time Scottish champions on a temporary basis (The Scottish Sun).
Talking to Football Insider, Whelan has suggested a move to the Gers could be the best thing for the £6.75m-valued 19-year-old (Transfermarkt). He explained:
“Right now I think Tuchel is looking at everybody, as a good manager does.
“Options are open, doors are open for every single player, whether they’ve been in the side or out the side so it is not going to happen right now. He still needs time to look at his squad, look at the players, look at the young players that are coming through.
“That will be assessed come the end of the season but we know that Chelsea are going to go out there and strengthen in the summer, there’s no doubt about that. A team like Chelsea cannot afford not to strengthen.
“That might put him back in the pecking order and the loan move might be the best move for him – he’ll be in Europe, he’ll be in the Champions League, he’ll also be in the spotlight for the Scottish FA as well, they’ll be able to watch him regularly which will help them when it comes to the international side.
“You can’t take away good quality young players, they’ve got to be progressing in real-time, in real games and a club like Rangers, where he’ll probably feel a lot more settled because he’s been there before, might be the best move for him.”
Good point
While Gilmour is still at the start of his career, he would likely still bring plenty to the Gers’ midfield. To earn any playing time at a squad with as much talent as Chelsea’s indicated how special the teenager is, and he has appeared in the Champions League as well as the Premier League.
As Whelan said, Thomas Tuchel may be looking to add to his squad in the summer – in the short-term, that could be bad news for Gilmour. At Ibrox, though, regardless of the qualities of the likes of Glen Kamara, Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo, the youngster would be the most talented midfielder in the squad. Not only would he likely play on a regular basis, but Steven Gerrard could even build the team around him.
